Jun 21, 2012 · The e906 capsule is a true reissue of the U3 capsule which Sennheiser decided it sounded the best (or was the most sought after). The e609 Silver capsule is a totally new design which I think looks pretty similar to a cheap chinese design (and sound like so too). I have no idea where the e609 Black comes into the picture.
Step 2 is which mic and how to use it. I've narrowed the "which" question to two, the Shure SM57 and the Sennheiser e609 Silver. My preference is to hang the mic over the top of the amp in front of the speaker. I know the SM57 is the choice of most, but from the looks of things the Sennheiser's design may be better suited for hanging over the ...SM57 or e609 - they are different flavors, but both are very good. The e906 has a few dB more sensitivity, and putting the switch in the "flat" setting actually gets that mic pretty close to being flat. 421 and 57 is a killer blend. sounds huge, and you can blend the two tones to taste. i use a 609 live, and it's a great mic on it's own. but my first choice for recording is the blend. I used the 421 + 57 combo before, but now I'm more partial to the 906: for me it's easier to get a nice sound on distorted guitar.
I like my 609 Silver's quite a bit, but you do have to use thema little differently than a 57 or an MD409. I have found that I have to put it further towards the outside of the speaker cone than I would other mic's. The 609 is still my go-to mic for live use though. As for the difference...
